The FSL Standards & Compliance Guide is a comprehensive resource designed to ensure fraternity and sorority chapters at the University of Richmond uphold the highest standards of excellence and responsibility. This guide outlines essential requirements and best practices in member development, civic engagement, community involvement, academic excellence, and general requirements. By adhering to these guidelines, chapters not only maintain good standing with the university but also contribute actively to campus life, foster inclusive communities, and empower members to excel academically and personally. Each section of this guide underscores our commitment to cultivating well-rounded leaders who positively impact our university community and beyond.

  • Member Development
    New member education should be structured and engaging, providing opportunities for learning and growth. This approach should extend beyond new member initiation to offer ongoing opportunities for personal and professional development for fully initiated members.
    • Host a leadership or brother/sister retreat annually
    • Host at least one education program for members per semester
    • Host at least one diversity, equity, inclusion, or belonging (DEIB) program for members per semester
    • Sends members to at least one program or conference hosted by their national organization annually
    • Create and adhere to a formalized transition plan for leadership turnover
    • Participate in outreach with alumni annually
  • Civic Engagement
    Chapters should actively contribute to their communities, fostering connections across diverse backgrounds and promoting collective responsibility for social well-being and change. Civic engagement is essential for fostering active citizenship and empowering individuals to make meaningful contributions to society.
    • Host at least one philanthropy event per semester
    • Host at least one community service event per year
    • Clearly outline chapter expectations for member participation in philanthropy and service programs
    • Collaborate with the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) to plan at least one of the above-mentioned events
  • Spider Community
    The FSL community emphasizes active engagement within the campus community and supports initiatives beyond individual chapters. This encourages collaboration with campus organizations and with the goal of promoting inclusivity and belonging.
    • Participate in SpiderFest annually
    • Partner with another FSL chapter to co-host at least one event annually
    • Partner with a non-FSL organization or campus department on at least one event or initiative annually
    • Attend philanthropy events hosted by other FSL chapters
  • Academic Excellence
    All FSL organizations prioritize and promote academic achievement among members through initiatives such as study hours, tutoring programs, and academic workshops. These efforts foster a culture of academic success and accountability within the Greek community.
    • Appoint or elect an academic chairperson annually
    • Develop personalized academic plans for members who need support
    • Celebrate the academic achievements of members regularly
    • Apply for scholastic honors and awards within the national organizations annually
  • CSI/UR Requirements

    These essential requirements ensure chapters maintain good standing with the university. They encompass standards for organizational conduct, academic achievement, operational tasks, and leadership development. Compliance with these standards demonstrates commitment to fostering a positive campus environment and contributing meaningfully to the university community.

    • Submit a full roster of active members each semester
    • Submit a new member education plan for each semester where recruitment occurs
    • Maintain lodge/cottage according to the chapter lease and University expectations
    • Engage with the annual RSO/FSL Leadership Awards by applying or nominating
      members/chapters where appropriate
    • Complete required trainings:
      • Hazing Prevention and Alcohol Misuse (once per status)
      • Risk Management / Hosting Events with Alcohol (annually)
      • FSL Leadership Institute (semesterly)
